The model is obviously very important when trying to achieve an photographic excellence in fashion or advertising. There are high expectations of the models. Needless to say there are also high demands on all other professionals involved in the process.

 The demands on a model vary from assignment to assignment. More information about this process can probably best be answered by the different agencies. If you are considering working as a model we suggest that you contact an agency. They can probably give you a good idea about your possibilities. In order to give you an evaluation of your possibilities they will need some photos. These pictures have to include a full body shot along with headshots.

You should keep your collection of your photos (portfolio) in a "model-book". This book is important and you have to be prepared to show it to your potential customers.

The same goes for us when we are thinking of using a particular model for an assignment. How your book shall be put together is something that you and your agency have to decide together.

When you are working as a model, do not forget to constantly upgrade the book with new photos. The book has to show the wide variety of assignments that you can perform. Remember that you have to be able to take similar photos in the future if demand should arise. It is better with a few good photos then many mediocre photos.

Assuming that you eventually will be assigned by an agency, you have to order a Set card. This card is usually done in a standard A5 form. This card it to be sent to your customers. They are expected to keep it.

When they need a model they will go through their archive of Set cards. It is also quite normal to take a photograph that shall be added to your agency's headsheet. This sheet will show all their models. This photograph shall be quite small and will only show your face. This is normally the first thing a potential customer will see of you. If this photograph does not give a good representation of your personality and your normal appearance it is very likely that you will lose customers. This photograph is obviously more important for potential customers that don’t know you. If a customer (like a photographer) doesn't like your photograph on the agency's headsheet he will not order your Set card.

We have only given you a short summary of the issues surrounding the life as a model and it is only from the standpoint of the photographer.
